# What a visit to this log leaves behind

Updated: 24 September 2026 — Session Log staff

Reading these pages leaves two traces and no others: a line in the web server's access log, and, if you
write to the desk, a message in one mailbox. This entry says what is in each of them, how long it stays
and who else gets to see it. The answer to the last one is nobody.

## Read alongside this

- [About this desk](https://coinlen.com/about) — who keeps the log, how each figure is made, and who pays for the publication
- [Terms](https://coinlen.com/terms) — what the research covers, and the limits it is read under

## What a request leaves in the log

One line goes into the server's access log for every request, and it carries seven things: when the
request arrived, which page it asked for, the status code it got back, how many bytes went out, the
IP address behind it, the browser or crawler string it announced itself with, and, when the browser
volunteers it, whichever page pointed here. A crawler gets no separate treatment: the same seven
fields are written for a bot as for a person, into the one file.

That log does three small jobs — keeping the site answering, showing up abuse, and telling us which
crawlers have been through — and it is opened for nothing else. A line older than 21 days is gone:
the log turns over and the old file is removed rather than archived. No line in it is used to
recognise anyone on a later visit, none is joined to anything held elsewhere, and none is sold,
rented or handed to an advertiser.

## What these pages do not run

Every page here is built before it is asked for and sent finished. Nothing is assembled in the
browser, nothing here calls home, and no cookie is set or read. There is no measurement script, no
tag manager, no advertising code, no pixel and no advertising identifier anywhere on this domain.

Type, stylesheet and the drawn figures are files served from this domain, so opening a page asks
nothing of any other server and tells no third party you were here. This domain also sits in no
measurement or advertising account that covers anything else, so there is nothing to stitch a visit
here onto a visit somewhere else.

## What happens to a message

editorial@coinlen.com is the only address this site publishes and the only mailbox it
reads. A message sent there is used to answer you and, where it corrects a figure, to reprint the
entry that carried it. It goes on no mailing list, because there is no mailing list, and it is
answered by the people who write the pages rather than by anybody else.

Correspondence about a correction is kept for twelve months, since a figure questioned once is
usually questioned again, and is then deleted along with the address it arrived from. Write from that
same address if you want to know what is still on file, or to have it cleared early, and it is
cleared. When this entry itself changes it is reprinted under the day it changed, and nothing else
moves that date.

## What never leaves this site

Nothing about a reader is sold, rented, swapped or passed on to anyone, and that includes whoever
paid to publish here. The hosting provider is the one unavoidable exception: the machine that
answers these requests is the machine that writes the log described above, and it is used to serve
this site and for nothing else.

The other way out is a link. Source links on these pages are plain addresses with no tracking
parameters attached to them, and once one is followed you are on that venue's site, under its policy
and its cookies, not under this one.

Corrections: editorial@coinlen.com.
