The initiative in the Satakunte region aims to heat over 11,000 residences, marking Marathon’s first district heating pilot project in Europe.
The 2-megawatt (MW) pilot project employs a district heating method, where water is centrally heated and distributed through an underground network of pipes to individual houses. This approach utilizes the excess heat from Bitcoin mining rigs to provide valuable community heating.

With the 2024 Bitcoin halving reducing block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, miners are exploring new revenue avenues.
